In order to help us better understand the transport needs of Surrey businesses, five Business Travel Forums were set up in 2012 in Guildford, Woking, Redhill and Reigate town centres and also at Surrey Research Park. We then worked together to help member businesses address staff travel issues and encourage sustainable travel.
Each Forum had £50,000 to spend each year until 2015 on transport related improvements or schemes that would not only help staff to travel sustainably and ease congestion in the area, but ultimately support economic growth. Forum members put forward ideas on how the money could be spent and the Travel SMART team then explored each idea to see if it could be done within the time and money available. If feasible, the idea was put to local councillors for final approval.
The final Business Travel Forum meetings were held in March 2015.
Helping Motivate Staff
In addition to helping Travel SMART local improvements, every forum member was given access to a range of free measures designed to encourage sustainable travel amongst their employees. These included:
- Road show events - Walking, Cycling or public transport focused events held in restaurants, car parks and receptions designed to motivate staff using competitions and give them the information on local transport services.
- Eco driver training - A portable computer driving simulator designed to improve fuel consumption by an average of 15% after only 20 minutes.
- Travel plan co-ordinator training - Free training for a 'Travel Champion' to give them all the knowledge and skills they need to address parking issues and encourage staff to think of alternatives to the car.
- Personal Travel Planning - Out friendly team of experts gave one to one advice to staff members on the cheapest, healthiest and most sustainable ways to commute.
