Re-thinking car ownership – how car clubs are taking off in Surrey
What is a car club?
Car clubs offer a flexible alternative to owning your own car, allowing you to borrow cars on a pay as you go basis.
They provide a pool of locally parked cars which are available to all members and can be booked online, over the phone, or via a phone app.
You simply pay an hourly rental and fuel charge as you use them and return them to their reserved parking space.
Launch of Guildford Car Club
With eight new car club cars now available in central Guildford, residents now have easy access to a range of efficient vehicles providing ‘pay as you go’ motoring. The Guildford launch is part of the wider expansion of car clubs in Surrey with 19 cars now available in five towns, as car clubs are becoming a popular alternative to car ownership.
Car club cars are accessible to members 24/7, 365 days a year and can be booked on-line, by a smart phone app or phone, with as little as a few minutes’ notice. Cars can be booked for a quick half hour trip or for a weekend away. All of the Guildford cars are located in their own designated parking bays, so you simply return the car to its bay at the end of your booking. They are in convenient locations, near to where people live or work.
Cutting harmful emissions
The Travel SMART team are working with Enterprise Car Club to cut air pollution and congestion.
All of the new cars are low or ultra low emission, with three of them being electric. To re-charge, the cars are plugged into electric vehicle fast charge points at the bays.
Special membership offer and booking prices
Enterprise Car Club are offering Surrey residents discounted annual membership for just £10 (normally £60), plus you get a 2 hour driving credit.
Just quote the promotional code SURREY22 when you join on-line or by phone.
Booking a car costs from just £3.70 per hour for a Nissan Leaf (electric vehicle, so no fuel charge), or £4.45 per hour for a Toyota Yaris Hybrid, plus 13p per mile to cover the cost of fuel.
How the car club could benefit you
Membership of the car club can give you access to a car when you need it, without the costs of purchasing or leasing a vehicle and on-going servicing, maintenance and insurance. It may replace the need for a second vehicle in your household, allowing you to sell your car, or not purchase a new one.
You’ll be able to easily check which cars are available when, and select from different size vehicles to suit your needs. With a network of cars to choose from, all within a short walk, car club membership gives you flexibility. For longer trips, Enterprise Car Club have cars in 19 UK cities, so you might use a combination of public transport and booking a car club car at your destination.
